Understanding More About the Party Divide

Republican Party Meeting

In this video, two factions within the Republican Party leadership call a meeting. As Chairman, and therefore Presiding Officer of the meetings, I asked the Body which agenda they wanted to proceed with. Robert Walker (a Precinct Chair in Spring, not Commissioner Robert Walker from Willis) shouted over me and demanded I only consider his agenda. Eventually, Jon Bouche (my opponent from the 2020 Election for County Chair) turned off my microphone, not allowing me to preside over the committee, disputing our meeting and keeping us from finalizing important Party business.

Next, the group that calls themselves the Freedom Caucus {and is also the Montgomery County Tea Party} took over the proceedings and barred not only myself, your elected County Chairman, but also over 1/5 of the elected Precinct Chairmen from participating in the meeting. They then purported to conduct Party business of electing officers and a steering committee, filling vacancies in the office of Precinct Chair, and even claimed to create their own new Bylaws that govern our Party.

Several months of feuds in the Party resulted and the State Party came to Montgomery County in an attempt to mediate the situation. The State Chairman, Matt Rinaldi came, and he brought an unknown, Matt Patrick, with him. Patrick was extremely combative toward the non-Freedom Caucus mediation participants and then wrote a scathing narrative of the proceedings that was extremely inaccurate and also completely unprofessional because Rinaldi requested the mediation to be kept private. Vice Chair Raquel Lewis, of the Montgomery County Republican Party, wrote the following response to Matt Patrick’s grossly inaccurate narrative:

**Republican Precinct Chairs Linda Stuckey and James Byers, and I were all participants in the mediation and agree with Raquel’s summary response. Also, Eric Opiela, a board-certified attorney (Legislative and Campaign Law), also attended the mediation and agreed with Raquel’s response.

Bizarrely, the Freedom Caucus hired an attorney and filed a writ of mandamus with the Texas Supreme Court demanding that I agree and honor their illegitimate actions. This was after several failed attempts at having the State Party penalize me.

Remember, this fight against the people’s chosen Party leader did not start with me, but with beloved Chairman Dr. Wilkerson. In 2018 this same group removed all of Chairman Dr. Wally Wilkerson’s authority from the Party, shouted over him at Party meetings, and together with the State Party declared Dr. Wally was a disgrace to the Republican Party. Since this group’s decision to work against the people’s chosen Party Chair in 2018, the Montgomery County Republican Party has suffered tremendously.

Below you can read my attorney’s response to their writ request. Of particular interest starts at page 7 with the description of unbecoming actions taken by the Freedom Caucus/Montgomery County Tea Party:

Chairman Bryan Christ received four “valid petitions for Emergency Special Meetings by various CEC factions… Given multiple valid meeting calls, Christ sought the advice of counsel and a parliamentarian, who advised him to resolve the conflicting agendas by, prior to convening the meeting, letting the body decide which agenda should be followed. He followed this advice and put the matter before the body. Robert Walker, who had petitioned one of the meetings insisted that his agenda… be followed without giving the body the opportunity to decide. Walker, along with Christ’s former opponent, Jon Bouché, who was present as a guest, proceeded to attempt to take Christ’s microphone away, then turned his microphone off, and ultimately physically took it from him, preventing him from conducting the meeting… In violation of Section 171.022(a)(1), TEX. ELEC. CODE [Texas Law], and Bylaws Article IV, Section 1, Walker then proceeded to “call to order” his own meeting and preside…He even asked his self-declared ‘sergeant at arms’ Calvin Russell to physically remove Christ from the room” (pages 7-9).

Additional Resources/Facts:

For several months, the Freedom Caucus claimed to pass brand new Bylaws governing our Party’s Executive Committee after our Organizational meeting (which is not allowed according to the State Party Rule). The State Party addressed this in a resolution regarding our county Party after the Freedom Caucus did finally agree their actions were illegitimate.

At one of the Freedom Caucus meetings, they illegitimately passed a resolution to remove me from Party bank accounts and I have had to pay party recurring expenses from my Chairman's bank account. Screenshots of recent bank records show the original Party bank account is almost empty (which had over $50,000 in it).

Conclusion

Like many before you have said, I know it’s the wish for everyone to get along, and had there been a reasonable solution, I think everyone would gladly do that. Let me explain why…

We are at a crossroads. Not over principles, or the things that make us Republicans - like liberty, the defense of innocent life, limited government, and property rights…. on those things we all agree.

Our conundrum is on how Republican nominees should be chosen. I stay in the fight in which I find myself because I’m solidly committed to protecting the will of the people. Specifically, the will of the people to choose their Party leaders as well as their Party’s nominees at the Primary Election, where voting is free and easily accessed. The other side, the leaders of it… even if the followers don’t realize it… are wanting to take away the people’s choice of Party Chairman. They have even indicated they are in favor of removing the Primary process altogether and going back to Republican candidates being chosen by an elite few that can attend the Republican State Convention. This is not a Montgomery County-only issue, but it is statewide. This post I cannot abandon.

I ask our county’s Republicans to become informed. Know who represents you in the Party (the Party Chairman and the Precinct Chairs). Know what they stand for, and do they represent you or the will of special interest group bosses? Don’t know how to figure this all out? Ask someone you trust… an Elected Official, politically involved friend, Republican Club leader…. figure it out! You will vote on Party leadership (County Chair and Precinct Chair) in March of 2024. Please go to the polls informed and ready to right our Party ship! The power is YOURS, at least for now.
